SIMPLE INTERROGATION

LESSON SUMMARY

In French, simple questions—or interrogative sentences—can be formed in three main ways. The most casual method is intonation, where you simply raise your voice at the end of a regular statement: Tu aimes le chocolat? (Do you like chocolate?). A slightly more formal and commonly used structure is “est-ce que”, placed at the beginning of the sentence: Est-ce que tu aimes le chocolat ?. Before a vowel sound, “est-ce que” becomes est-ce qu’. Finally, the most formal or literary way is inversion, where the verb and subject are reversed and joined by a hyphen: Aimes-tu le chocolat ?. All three forms can also be used with question words like (where), quand (when), pourquoi (why), and comment (how), depending on what information you’re asking for.
